lyrics

John Muir

I look out from this sandy shore to the open ocean blue
And the cool breeze off the water lifts my hood
The seabirds make a ragged noise, it sounds like they’re complaining
Is there something that they know, something I should?

And in a forest to the west pillars rise up to the sky
A basilica of maple, pine and birch
But holy men with their only book say heaven put them there for us
So they cut the forest down and built a church

And the reason John Muir wrote about trees
Is the reason that they kicked out Adam and Eve
It’s a fight as old as the Great Pyramid
Do we praise Mother Nature or put her up for bid?
Til the Alleghenies are as bare as the moon?
Til it’s a hundred and thirty by a quarter to noon?
Til the flood waters rise and the saints march in?
Will we ever see blue skies smiling again?

I get a sense of winter’s chill when November leaves go brown
And the chimney tops start putting out their smoke
And I wonder why the lakes go dry and the ice drifts out to sea
And the men in towers laugh like it’s a joke

Their antithetic creeds go awkwardly hand in hand
The sign of the cross and the sign of the dollar bill
But the glory of a moonrise and the thunder of a wave
Have yet to be included in your will

And the reason John Muir wrote about trees
Is the reason that they kicked out Adam and Eve
It’s a fight as old as the Great Pyramid
Do we praise Mother Nature or put her up for bid?
Til the Alleghenies are as bare as the moon?
Til it’s a hundred and thirty by a quarter to noon?
Til the flood waters rise and the saints march in?
Will we ever see blue skies smiling again?
It’s the bend in the road that leads to the ditch
And who are the saviors and which one is which
When your reason for dying rules the way that you live
What does it matter the answer you give?
