World in Flux

Samuel Heck thumbnail
Samuel Heck World in Flux is a delicately balanced album that weaves subtle electronic samples into a wholly organic blend of futuristic folk and retro-oriented psychedelia. The patient listener will hear parallels to artists as disparate as the Shins, Eels, Fruit Bats, Decemberists, Leonard Cohen, and Magnetic Fields. A surprising gem that innovates while also keeping the songwriting tight and lyrically moving. Favorite track: Acorn.

Salty Blanket I’ve been walking around for days Avoiding all that still remains Doing my best to grow a beard Willing you to reappear Watching tankers out at sea Bigger than you would believe There’s a splotch across the sun I still think of you when I come Show me how to set this straight Can someone die from heartache It’s impossible to see An impending catastrophe There’s a thickness to the air A salty blanket that you wear All the seagulls on the pier Fly away then reappear I’m not working much these days Maybe I should go away Where’s the remedy the cure God this life is too absurd Show me how to set this straight Can someone die from heartache It’s impossible to see An impending catastrophe

Acorn 04:13
Acorn Rest your head here on my heaving sweaty chest You seem vague and dispossessed I know no one ever opens like a bridge Maybe you could use a switch The way the morning light frames your silhouette Please come with me Juliet Did you see me at the pulpit Sunday morn Comparing grace to an acorn Mixing metaphors tripping over words Maybe faith is for the birds My heart doesn’t beat in time with anything I’m pretty sure the past needs burying Late at night sometimes your face will just appear I know that must sound so weird You only know me as the guy who plants your trees And I’m almost in my forties Taking pictures of the things that I’ll forget Please come with me Juliet I know people who can live with their regrets Guess I wouldn’t make that bet There’s a train that leaves at eight am on Friday I’ll be waiting at your driveway My heart doesn’t beat in time with anything I’m pretty sure the past needs burying

Fountain 02:34
Fountain It’s a seventies sky Like when I was a child I’m shaking but I don’t know why There’s smoke in the air Then goldfinches appear I’m beguiled and always unprepared Calling out some name Calling out some name like it’s a prayer Running through the woods Sweating in my saggy underwear Standing on this mountain Hands flapping shouting I’m tripping weeping like a fountain I know there’s no escape From obstacles I make I’m swimming in all my own mistakes Thinking of a place Thinking of a place I used to live Remembering the roof Memories I never could forgive I’m ready now Hoping I’m ready to live
6.
Let Loose 02:31
Let Loose Oh softest morning oh frozen light Fallow field fluttering with life Snakes seeming swimming soaking some sun Dandelion seeds come undone Peaches are rotting in the grass Everything turns too fast Oh dappled dove oh brindled squirrel Sunflowers describing a circle Migrating Monarchs moving methodically Crows watching from the birch tree Leaves know winter’s coming soon They’ll need to learn to let loose

Field of Tomorrow I’m afraid to walk to the end of the road There’s something there in the moonlight Something dark in the road And I don’t wanna talk about these tough solutions Something cold in the sunshine Something lost in the waves And we both know There’s a long way to go And we’ve lost time Chasing the wind I worry for hearts of the parted companions Reaching out through the window Through a desert of held breaths And I don’t wanna lose my way to salvation Forget that I had a garden In the field of tomorrow And we both know There’s a long way to go And I’ve lost time Chasing the wind And imagining your-- And we both know There’s a long way to go And we’ve lost time Chasing the wind again

Mossy Rock 03:12
Mossy Rock There is a rock blanked in the thickest moss Out by the river where no one seems to go Days when I’m low all undertowed I walk these seven some-odd miles and I talk Let me hear you say sorry I can tell that you’re worried All the trees in the forest Know that I’m honest and ready to confess I’ll sob my secrets into the fracture That splits this stone in two like a cracker Whisper my desires into that hollow And see what comes of it tomorrow Let me hear you say sorry I can tell that you’re worried All the trees in the forest Know that I’m honest and ready to confess I climb on top lay in the moss And listen to the story of it’s journey Crawling out of the sea before anybody And offering this moment of atonement And Maybe I don’t deserve it

John Muir 04:08
John Muir I look out from this sandy shore to the open ocean blue And the cool breeze off the water lifts my hood The seabirds make a ragged noise, it sounds like they’re complaining Is there something that they know, something I should? And in a forest to the west pillars rise up to the sky A basilica of maple, pine and birch But holy men with their only book say heaven put them there for us So they cut the forest down and built a church And the reason John Muir wrote about trees Is the reason that they kicked out Adam and Eve It’s a fight as old as the Great Pyramid Do we praise Mother Nature or put her up for bid? Til the Alleghenies are as bare as the moon? Til it’s a hundred and thirty by a quarter to noon? Til the flood waters rise and the saints march in? Will we ever see blue skies smiling again? I get a sense of winter’s chill when November leaves go brown And the chimney tops start putting out their smoke And I wonder why the lakes go dry and the ice drifts out to sea And the men in towers laugh like it’s a joke Their antithetic creeds go awkwardly hand in hand The sign of the cross and the sign of the dollar bill But the glory of a moonrise and the thunder of a wave Have yet to be included in your will And the reason John Muir wrote about trees Is the reason that they kicked out Adam and Eve It’s a fight as old as the Great Pyramid Do we praise Mother Nature or put her up for bid? Til the Alleghenies are as bare as the moon? Til it’s a hundred and thirty by a quarter to noon? Til the flood waters rise and the saints march in? Will we ever see blue skies smiling again? It’s the bend in the road that leads to the ditch And who are the saviors and which one is which When your reason for dying rules the way that you live What does it matter the answer you give?

Every Feather Shines Two lifeless sparrows Lay in the snow Unjustly killed by My too clean window So many songs unsung But I’ll take your melodies and I’ll give you life once again With words about endless skies and long soaring dives that never ever end Though just as tragic Only now can I be Close enough to see Your perfect beauty And every feather shines But I’ll take your melodies and I’ll give you life once again With words about endless skies and long soaring dives that never ever end

The Lilies 02:32
The Lilies Clueless as a fledgling baby bird I was overheard talking to the sky Asking heavens why can’t I overcome This stupid feeling from deep inside my brain? Cue the evening rain Chorus: And though for some it’s reassuring It hasn’t been for me And after all I’ve given all the fucks I have for considering the lilies V: Crash the kite untie the daisy chain Cork the good champagne The picnic’s been postponed Let’s just all get stoned And marvel at how slow The treetops seem to blow Then call it a day And phone the fiancee And though it makes some love seem stable It’s never has for mine And in the end I’ve never been the type To make hay while the sun shines And though for some it’s reassuring It’s really not for me And after all I’ve given all the fucks I have For considering the lilies

This Brilliant Display Soft fragile rain then hard light again The way the wind surges and strains Moss on the trees finger-like leaves You ask me why I don’t believe You hear your name in every sound Feel some presence all around You ask me how this all happened I see the things that are blackened Remnants of winter thawing and shimmer You step your foot in the river Hand to the sky I’m always surprised The way the sun burns through my eyes You see design everywhere A hand pushing paint through the air Point to this brilliant display I watch a world in decay

Intertwined 01:50
Intertwined I’ve been walking on this trail for eighteen days Seen some things I’ve been shocked I’ve been amazed And I know the brightest stars are still so far away Stretching out across the ridge I watched a hawk I remember what we said last time we talked I’m not running but I’m not looking behind You said everything’s a little intertwined
