Inky Fingers 03:39
Inky Fingers It’s hopeful well there’s hope Though the chances have fallen quickly from bad to worse And if you knew him and you might know him You’d put the lord’s name in your mouth and start to curse And when I saw him all tubes and wires His long beard nowhere to be seen I put my hand inside his hand And whispered below the rattle of machines On the way home driving through the rain I had to pull over again Under an overpass I called out his name And tried to nullify my brain And in the darkness of the evening I tried to see a glass half full But I pictured his inky fingers And felt a churning dull aching pull Still I’m praying and I don’t pray And I’m never one to heed god’s rules Yet there’s this strength in holding hope Though I don’t think he would bear to suffer fools On the way home driving through the rain I had to pull over again Under an overpass I called out his name And tried to nullify my brain

Brushes 02:48
Brushes She’s painting pictures while I sleep I hear the brushes in my dreams Abstract depictions of some horse That ran her over when she was four She never seems to get it right I’m sure she’ll throw it in the fire Just like the pictures that she found When her mom was out of town It’s not that she’s this broken bird It’s just some things may have occurred Despite the tricks and my mistakes She’ll be beside when I wake
3.
Unchosen 04:04
Unchosen You smell of cigarettes and sex And the way that you’re listing I can tell you’ve been drinking There’s a beer in the fridge if you want it Some salad and cold lasagna I’ll be out on the porch Waiting for a storm that never comes You sit in the corner sipping water Hold your hand to a candle Scratch at your ankle Remind me of things I can’t remember Roll this bitter pill in sugar I’ll hold you in these thin arms Ignoring all the worms inside my brain Help me shepherd in the day Watch the sun’s fragile display Leave this tangled mess behind Puzzling my mind You’re lost to dreaming so peaceful The room growing lighter A slow inching spider The way I can sense subtle spinning And yearn to find some beginning Somehow flipping the script Spread these wings so clipped and fly away The dog at the doorway breathing fast Stretching my hand out He comes around Happily sharing this moment A life reversed unchosen Stepping outside out of time His dog trailing behind into the day

All the Things Paper hat a box of white tip matches All the things you can’t afford to keep Dusty yellowed photos Piled by location Phonograph your grandfather’s typewriter You’ll hold everything inside your head A hand knit baby’s blanket Keepsakes from the war Drop it all let it lay behind you Leave it here for someone else to find
5.
Sugar Cube 04:06
Sugar Cube If I could slip away tonight I would Sneak into the ether like a bird Trowel through the night Drifting out of sight Still I am tethered to this world Dissolving myself like a sugar cube Trying to avoid and elude I’ll exercise my will Purify and distill Still there is nothing I can do Every living molecule in my body Fastening and holding me together Though I’ve been described as being cloudy I’ll stay encased in this thin skin forever There’s nothing that can hold you in my arms You float on the horizon I’m a stone There’s a wave that brings you close Then you’re caught in undertow The purpose of the tides remains unknown If I could only step into the water Swim until I’m tired then swim farther Lose sight of the land Watch the world expand Leave behind the madness and the horror Every living molecule in my body Fastening and holding me together Though I’ve been described as being cloudy I’ll stay encased in this thin skin forever

The Feeling of Falling I followed your lead Took up reading talking walking Through the dead leaves Pulled up carpets and sanded the floors With shaky hands I talk to your plants Do my damndest To try and understand The feeling of falling in dreams Mirrors how it all seems Every night in this place I go a little crazy

Released 03:05
Released It’s all in the way The light falls away I’ll draw this line Here in the pines I’ll say my name yell it without shame Lies that I’ve told My loss of control Slipping down life I will atone tonight You write these words and tell them what you’ve heard See me here stretched bare as this air (in disrepair) Time will dissolve this all I’ll rest my bones beyond these walls Stars overhead Wine and the bread The blood in these veins Can’t be contained The vines will grow across this winding road And all I am will be released again

Dissipate 01:44
Dissipate Staring at the evening sky Looking for a sign Everything I see and hear Bleeds into design There’s a moon that’s nearly full It always invites Wondering if you can see Me down here tonight And all I know Everything I hope I have learned to bleed for real Where’s my antidote Sitting on the wooden dock Granite down below Listening for the way wind And the foghorn blows Seems there’s no relief from this I’m always awake Somehow you’re in everything As I dissipate I can see the shore from here I can see the lights Everything crossing now I’ll see you in the night I’m always awake Come back right now I’m holding fast Bless me at my core I don’t know I’m pure But wait for me I don’t call the way my love Crawling toward the sky Tonight I’m watching everything I swear it’ll be all right
